Our clients for this private residential project were looking to radically overhaul their Primrose Hill property to cater for the varied needs of their growing family. We completely refurbished the lower ground floor, removing a staircase and partition walls to create a flexible, open-plan zone comprising kitchen, dining and living areas.
A new side and rear extension maximise visual connections to a mature garden. As it is located in a conservation area, the existing recess between the house and its neighbours had to be preserved. The single storey side extension is fully glazed to reduce visual impact, whilst the rear extension is in keeping with those of the neighbours.
The children’s second floor bedrooms have been separated by a new bathroom, and feature built-in timber mezzanine levels with integrated furnishings below and bags of additional storage space. The third floor master bedroom has been refurbished with bespoke joinery, built-in wardrobe and bed.
A minimal and elegant materials palette subtly unites the existing building and new extension.
Materials have been exposed where possible, including supporting steelwork and brickwork, with a polished concrete floor at lower ground level and concrete stair up to ground level.
A series of gently meandering steps lead from the rear extension up to a newly landscaped garden, replacing an old retaining wall and creating a greater connection between the house’s internal and external spaces.
