Christ College school approached us to build a state of the art basketball venue and a mixed use sports facility that could be accessed by private and public users. The nature of this is complex, so we came up with an idea of taking advantage of the sloping landscape. By opening up 2 separate entrances at different levels we enabled a safe ‘play space’ that would accomodate the children while the main courts and facilities were occupied.
The basketball court and arena is wrapped in translucent skin and the pattern on the outside of the building was generated by the motion of flying basketballs. One of the challenges was that this school has a science and maths specialism and we were trying to propose a sports facility so we had to show how this would integrate into the school offering .To overcome this we built in sports science classrooms and used a scientific theme throughout the design.
